Not too far from Mount Whitney is the beautiful Onion Valley trailhead, we went backpacking with Henry's buddy from work and his girlfriend. It was a 4 mile hike straight up 2000 feet. We camped the night before at Alabama Hills where the strange rock formations and angry clouds make for an atmospheric moonlit gathering. Weather was for the most part cool and comfortable up but it thunderstormed on the way down. Unbelievably gorgeous views with emerald lakes and snow capped peaks, misty mornings and rainy nights, it was worth the grueling (for me) hike up!
